Fake tertiary institutions: FG urges parents to conduct background checks on schools

THE Federal Government on Thursday appealed to parents and guardians to conduct background checks on educational institutions, both at home and abroad before sending their children to such schools.

This is considering the increasing number of fake tertiary institutions who are only not accredited but are responsible for churning out unqualified graduates.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa made the appeal in Abuja, at a one-day interactive meeting between the management of the National Youth Service Corps(NYSC) and registrars of foreign corps producing institutions in some African countries.

He said it became imperative for parents to carry out the checks to avoid falling prey to such institutions.

His words: “May I also advise Nigerian youths, parents, and guardians to always carry out background checks on educational institutions both at home and abroad in order to avoid falling prey to operators of fake institutions or getting admitted for non-accredited courses.”

While stressing the importance of educational institutions to the provision of qualified manpower for various sectors of the economy, he said this will be possible if all stakeholders work in tandem with the establishing rules

He added that: “While institutions in Nigeria are constantly subjected to the regulatory control of relevant agencies of government, especially on quality assurance, it is important that we mutually forge a mutually beneficial relationship with foreign institutions being patronized by our compatriots.”

Ohaa noted that this will ensure that the products of such institutions, meet the basic requirements to function effectively in various sectors.

Earlier, the Director-General(DG) NYSC, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim said the meeting is aimed at bridging the communication gap between the scheme and tertiary institutions in Africa.

He lamented that the gap has become challenges which constitute impediments to the mobilization process.
