New Infectious Disease in China, Seven Dead, 60 Infected

A new tick-borne infectious disease in China has killed 7 individuals and infected 60 others, warning about the risk of infection from human-to-human.

Throughout the first half of the year, over 37 people contracted the SFTS virus throughout East China’s Jiangsu province. Subsequently, the State-run Global Times cited accounts of 23 people infected in East China’s Anhui province.

There have been signs like fever, coughing in a woman from Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu, who was infected by the virus. Leucocyte, a platelet in her body, was found to decrease. She was released from the hospital after a month of treatment.

The study said that there were at least seven deaths in Anhui and Zhejiang as a result of the virus.

SFTS virus isn’t a new virus. In 2011, China isolated that virus pathogen and it is part of the group Bunyavirus.

Virologists agree that ticks can pass on the infection to people and that the virus can be transmitted between people.

Sheng Jifang, a physician said that the potential humans-to-human virus transmission to cannot be ruled out; the virus can be transmitted via blood or mucosa to others by patients.

Doctors cautioned that tick bite is the main form of transmission, so long as people are vigilant, panic over the contagion of such a virus is not necessary.
