“To the girl from the South Side who took on a role she didn’t ask for and made it her own: Happy Birthday, Michelle,” Obama tweeted using his official @POTUS Twitter handle.

“I love you.”

The tweet was attached to an image of the couple sitting in the back of a golf cart while dressed for the Inaugural Ball in Washington, DC, on January 20, 2009.

In the photograph taken by official White House photographer Pete Souza, the couple are gesturing with their hands to the camera as they are carted off to the festivities.

2. He also called out her full name in his farewell speech.

3. He tried to sneak a peek at her during an official White House ceremony.
