Strong Girl Mpho MacChambers is fighting for women and girls at UN General Assembly

We are so thrilled to catch up with our Strong Girl ambassador, Mrs. Mpho MacChambers in New York at this year’s 72nd UN General Assembly and to find out what she has been up to since joining us at UNGA in 2015.

Two years ago, Mpho was selected as ONE’s Strong Girl ambassador – defined as a woman who had made a significant impact in her community. She was one of more than 3,000 nominated from across South Africa to join us as an ambassador at UN General Assembly.

Mpho, born in Polokwane, Limpopo, learnt the importance of education and fighting for human rights at an early age from her parents. Her mother was a teacher and her father was a lawyer.

Her role at UN General Assembly in 2015 was to advocate with ONE to the South African government on the urgency of robust and firm action to place investments in women and girls at the center of its fight against poverty.

“Since the Strong Girl campaign and my last trip to UNGA, my social impact project (SheCan) has grown and developed significantly in its mission and reach.

Now called Her H(art) our work continues to uplift and empower South African women and girls who are, particularly, at high risk of disability-based and gender-based violence. Our initiatives include Community & Public Arts outreach, Arts Therapy and Arts-based Skills Development – all with the vision of freeing 500 at risk women and girls from the cycle of violence by 2020.

I’m really excited about our growing impact and the journey of transformation we’ve been on over the last two years. My encounter with the Strong Girl campaign was definitely an integral part of building my hope and confidence in the work which we do and for that I want to say a genuine and heartfelt THANK YOU to the ONE Africa team!

I look forward to representing ONE’s policies and Poverty Is Sexist viewpoints again this year in which ever way I can.”
