Poverty is sexist — it hits girls and women hardest. Educate a girl from a poor community, and it can dramatically improve her health, wealth, and potential. She’s less likely to become a child bride, contract diseases like HIV, or die young. She could help lift her family — and her entire country — out of poverty.
130 million girls around the world are being denied an education — and 51 million of them are right here in Africa. Without an education, no child can reach their full potential. This has to change.
How can we change this?
African leaders are meeting soon in Ethiopia for the AU Summit. The summit is a huge opportunity for our leaders to agree to invest in education, empowerment and employment. But there’s a risk that if they do nothing, girls will get left further behind.
If they agree to increase investment in education, employment and empowerment, they could make sure every girl gets the chance to go to school and learn. It’s an opportunity to transform the future of the entire continent. But if they do nothing, even more girls will be left behind. There are 51 million girls across Africa who are not in school.
We need your help to make sure these girls are on the agenda.
How can you get involved?
Our leaders need to do a lot more for girls’ education. And fast. Help us get the message to African leaders. Add your name to send a postcard, and we’ll deliver them to leaders and their teams in the run up to the Summit.
We’ll deliver your postcard to African leaders and their teams in the run up to the Summit. If you agree that 51 million girls out of school is unacceptable, tell African leaders they need to do more now.
If you believe all girls count, add your name and tell African leaders to act now.
