Every single day Nigeria loses over 2000 children to preventable disease and illness. This is just one of the many reasons why we launched our Make Naija Stronger campaign calling for improved health sector investments in Nigeria this April. If Nigeria wants to attain its vision to become a leading world economy by 2020 health investments will be critical.

To continue the work ONE has already achieved this year, we have partnered with the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) taking place on November 6 in Lagos, Nigeria to call on the Nigerian government to increase health investment! AFRIMA is Africa’s biggest music event that provides the continent with an amazing opportunity to share and celebrate its musical talent and cultural heritage with millions of fans around the world. In 2014 ONE’s song, ‘Cocoa na Chocolate’ won the Best African Collaboration award and in 2015 our song ‘Strong Girl’was nominated for Best African Collaboration.
This exciting partnership with AFRIMA can lead to real change in Nigeria by drawing attention to the urgent need for a health care reform to AFRIMA’s global audience and utilizing the power of culture to achieve social change. ONE’s work with AFRIMA will mobilise the voices of the 150 artists attending the show to amplify the call to action for the Government of Nigeria to Make Naija Stronger through a boost in health investments and services across the country.
Speaking at the roundtable summit touching on ONE’s role and experience in championing social justice through music, ONE Africa, Executive Director, Nachilala Nkombo said:
“Over the years, we’ve seen how powerful of a force music can be in galvanising people around an issue. ONE Africa has worked closely with African talent to drive conversations in the continent that have changed narratives and caught the attention of decision makers. African musicians using their voices to inspire more than two millions Africans to take action is just one of the many reasons we should be celebrating African music,”.
On November 4 AFRIMA hosted the Africa Music Summit where a panel discussion spoke about charting a synergistic way forward for development and economic empowerment. Panelists who attended the summit included Alh Lai Mohammed (Hon. Minister of Information and Culture, Nigeria), Ms. Angela Martins (Head, Culture Division, African Union), Ms. Nachilala (Nkombo Director, Africa, ONE Campaign), Mr. Omar Essaidi (Music & Artistic Director, Hit Radio, Morocco), Don Jazzy (Music Producer, Nigeria) and many more.
